India, officially the Republic of India (Bhārat Gaṇarājya),[e]country in South Asia. It is the seventh largest country by area, the second -most populous country (with over 1.2 billion people), and the most populous democracy in the world. It is bounded by the Indian Ocean on the south, the Arabian Sea on the southwest, and the Bay of Bengal on the southeast. It shares land borders with Pakisthan to the west;[f] China, Nepal, and Bhutan to the northeast; and Myanmar (Burma) and Bangladesh to the east. In the Indian Ocean, India is in the vicinity of Shri Lanka and the Maldives. India's Andaman and Nicobar Island share a maritime border with Thailand and Indonesia
In 2017, the Indian Economy was the world's sixth larges by nominal GDP and third largest by purchasing power parity.[15] Following market- based economic reforms in 1991, India became one of the fastest growing major economics and is considered a newly industralised country. However, it continues to face the challenges of poverty, corruption, malnutrition, and inadequate public heathcare. A nuclear weapons state and regional power , it has third largest standing army in the world and ranks fifth in military expenditure among nations. India is a federal republic governed under a parliamentary system and consists of 29 states and 7 union territories. It is a pluralistic, multilingual and multi-ethnic society and is also home to a diversity of wildlife in a variety of protected habitats.

CULTURE
India is the birthplace of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, and other religions. Collectively known as Indian religions.[11] Indian religions are a major form of world religions along with Arbhamic ones. Today, Hinduism and Buddhism are the world's third and fourth-largest religions respectively, with over 2 billion followers altogether,[12][13][14] and possibly as many as 2.5 or 2.6 billion followers.[12][15] Followers of Indian religions – Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists make up around 80–82% population of India.
India is one of the most religiously and ethnically diverse nations in the world, with some of the most deeply religious societies and cultures. Religion plays a central and definitive role in the life of many of its people. Although India is a secular Hindu-Majority country, it has a large muslim population. Except for Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram and Laksdweep, Hindus form the predominant population in all 29 states and 7 union territories. Muslims are present throughout India, with large populations in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharastha, Kerala, Telengana, West Bengal and Assam; while only Jammu and Kashmir and Lakshadweep have majority Muslim populations Sikhs and Christians are other significant minorities of India
FESTIVALS
India, being a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic and multi-religious society, celebrates holidays and festivals of various religions. The three National holidyas in india, the Independence Day, the Repulic and the Gandhi Jayanti, are celebrated with zeal and enthusiasm across India. In addition, many Indian staes and regions have local festivals depending on prevalent religious and linguistic demographics. Popular religious festivals include the Hindu festivals of Navratri, Janmashtami, Diwali ,Maha Shivratri, Ganesh Chathuthi Durga Puja Holi Rath Yatra, Ugadi, Onam, Vasant Pachami, Rakshabandhan, and Dusshera. Several Harvest Festival such as Makar Sankaranti, Pongal and Raja sankranti festival are also fairl celebrated during the year in this country.
